The Bourbon Ledger exists because most bourbon writing falls into one of two camps: unpaid hype for whatever a distillery is shipping this quarter, or forum-grade tasting notes with no structure behind them. We wanted something else — a publication that reads like a serious weekly briefing, not a blog.

What we publish

  • One weekly Issue — bourbon news, buying guidance, and a cocktail, delivered every Thursday.
  • One monthly Master Class — a long-form deep dive into a single topic in bourbon production, history, or buying strategy.
  • Bottle Guide — an ongoing database of bottle reviews, carrying mash bill, proof and a 10-point Ledger Score where the evidence supports one, with our own tasting notes published when we have written them up.
  • Bourbon School — a glossary and learning center built to support everything else we publish, so no article assumes knowledge you don't have yet.

How we rate bourbon

We rate the whiskey in the glass, out of 10, on sensory grounds — balance, complexity, integration, finish and distinctiveness. Price, availability and collectibility are reported alongside a rating and never folded into it: a bottle earns nothing for being expensive or hard to find, and loses nothing for being neither.

A Verified Quality Score requires documented evidence across all five of those dimensions. Ratings published before we set that standard are kept, labeled as Legacy Editorial Ratings, and shown with a different mark so they are never mistaken for verified ones. The catalog currently holds 7 Legacy Ratings and 0 Verified Scores; the rest are unrated, which we show rather than hide.

We preserve historical ratings and disclose missing evidence rather than inventing explanations or quietly changing numbers. Ratings are ours alone; we do not accept payment for reviews or coverage.

Editorial independence

We buy the bottles we review. When a distillery sends a sample, we disclose it in the piece. Ledger Scores and verdicts are never for sale.

Where we are right now

The Bourbon Ledger is young. The issue sequence starts at No. 001 (Michter's) and currently runs through No. 012 — 12 real, published issues. Some Bottle Guide entries don't carry a Ledger Score yet simply because that issue's own coverage didn't score the bottle; that's a gap in what's been scored so far, not a placeholder.
