How we rate bourbon

In use today

The Bourbon Ledger distinguishes editorial quality ratings from community opinion and personal taste. Our existing ratings reflect Ledger editorial judgments. Some predate our current scoring methodology and are identified as Legacy Editorial Ratings. New Verified Quality Scores require documented evidence across balance, complexity, integration, finish, and distinctiveness. We preserve historical ratings and disclose missing evidence rather than inventing explanations or retroactively changing scores.

Planned — not yet published

Audience Scores will reflect independently researched community consensus. Palate Match will estimate how closely a bourbon aligns with a particular drinker's preferences. Neither will be interchangeable with a Ledger Quality Score. No bourbon in the guide carries either figure today, and we would rather say so than show a number we have not earned.

Where the catalog stands today: 7 Legacy Editorial Ratings · 0 Verified Quality Scores · 3 awaiting assessment · 0 Audience Scores · Palate Match not yet published.

Legacy Rating
A published Ledger editorial judgment that predates our current evidence standard. The number is preserved exactly; its sensory basis was not recorded.
Tasting notes
Our own nose, palate and finish, published when we have written them up. We do not present other reviewers' observations as ours.
Review Pending

Audience Score Pending
We researched the community evidence and it did not support a number we would defend.
